From the turn of the year, homeowners in Sweden will lose money exporting solar power to the electricity grid when electricity prices are negative. Therefore, Ferroamp is now launching the option to automatically limit the export, even for systems that do not have a battery.
“The conditions in the Swedish electricity grid are constantly changing and we are constantly developing new functions in our systems to support our customers. Ferroamp now gives solar cell owners flexibility so that it will be worthwhile to contribute renewable electricity to the electricity grid.” says Kent Jonsson, CEO, Ferroamp
In recent years, negative prices have become increasingly common in the electricity grid. It occurs when electricity production is high at the same time as demand is low. This means that electricity producers must pay for electricity they deliver to the grid. In northern Sweden, prices were negative about ten percent of the time in the first half of 2025. In the south, the corresponding figure was six percent.
Homeowners with solar cells on the roof receive a tax reduction of 60 öre/kWh and have therefore still profited from selling their surplus. At the turn of the year, however, the tax reduction will be removed, which means that there will be a loss on supplying electricity to the electricity grid when the spot price is negative.
PV owners with a battery have the option to store the surplus to use when the sun is no longer shining. For those who only have solar cells, there is currently usually only the option of either completely refraining from exporting electricity to the electricity grid or manually turning off the solar cells every time there are negative prices.
The Swedish energy optimization company Ferroamp has developed a smart AI-based control of batteries under the name FerroAI. In the beginning of next year, it will be expanded so that it can also control plants with only solar cells. Production from the solar cells will then automatically be reduced when the electricity price is negative to avoid export to the electricity grid. The customer thus avoids fees and at the same time helps to balance supply and demand in the electricity grid.
“A battery with our smart control provides many benefits, such as maximizing self-use of solar electricity and exploiting variations in the spot price in the electricity market while cutting power peaks. This is the first step in the development of the service also for customers without a battery, and more features will come later.” says Kent Jonsson.
