SSO

How to install an SSO?

For instructions on installing SSO, see manual under Downloads.

Keep in mind!

  • The DC cable between SSO and EnergyHub is, like Ferroamp’s entire DC network, safety earthed and the plus and negative poles therefore do not need to be separated. Cable from solar panels to SSO should still be separated as usual.
  • Solar panels should never be connected to the SSO when the DC grid is energized. Either the EnergyHub system should be turned off, or DC circuit breakers in DC distribution should be open. Never rely on current isolating components, but always check before starting work.
  • SSOs must be mounted and installed vertically, the wall on which the SSOs are installed must withstand a temperature of 70 degrees and be able to support a weight of at least 10 kg. Ferroamp advises against installing SSOs in direct sunlight.
  • You can only use the included MC4 connectors that come with the solar string optimizer (SSO) to connect the solar panel string to the SSO.
  • The DC mains connection on the SSO is dimensioned for a maximum cable area of 4 mm2. The required dimension in the installation is determined by the distance between the SSO and the EnergyHub, as well as the cable dimension between the EnergyHub and the DC distribution where the SSO is connected. The voltage drop between SSO and EnergyHub may be a maximum of 2%.

NOTE
Only trained electricians may install Ferroamp products.

Where should I place the SSO?

Where should I place the SSO?

The solar string optimizer integrates solar panels into the Ferroamp system and is therefore placed between the solar panels and the EnergyHub. Otherwise, you need to keep in mind that:

  • Ferroamp’s SSO is IP65 rated and can thus be placed where it is easiest from a space and installation perspective.
  • The SSO can be placed outdoors as it provides good cooling. From a safety perspective, it is also an advantage if they are located close to the solar cells because then you get a larger part of the cables in the plant between SSO and EnergyHub instead of between SSO and solar panel. In the event of a shutdown of the system, the cables between SSO and EnergyHub become de-energized.
  • Placing in direct sunshine should always be avoided.
  • Each SSO 8kW contributes with a heat load of up to about 60 W at full solar power production, so they should be placed where they can get a satisfactory air circulation with specified space between them and on a road that can handle temperatures up to 70°C
  • Wall and fastening material must be able to support at least 10 kg
  • In order for the cooling via the heatsinks to work as intended, the SSO must be mounted vertically with connections facing down.

Can I use panel optimizer in the Ferroamp system?

Ferroamp’s Solar String Optimizer (SSO) optimizes each solar panel string at the string level with a Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) built into each SSO.

However, if one or more solar panels in the solar string are in partial shade, it may be an idea to install individual panel optimizers on these panels. It will optimize the shaded panel to maximize its power output.

How many panels can I connect to an SSO?

The SSO works in the range of 100-720V Vmpp and we always recommend being within it in a string of solar panels. Note that the maximum Vmpp will be slightly lower if the panel is above 12.5A Impp (absolute maximum is 14 A). This generally does not affect the number of panels as a higher current usually means a lower voltage.

Use one of Ferroamp’s tools to calculate how many SSOs are needed.

NOTE

In the case of bifacial or glass/glass panels, position the panels so that the IMPP does not exceed 14 A.
